June 2022

After voting with the shared members, the decision was made to make Jay Lavender's first foal, "Jay Lavender 2021", our first new horse.

We visited the ranch for the procedure.

The rancher commented that although it was his first foal, he was not small, and that he seemed to respond well because of his thin skin, which made me feel good about him (laughs).

Procedure completed. Isn't he handsome?

August 2022

Horses can change in a month…

I don't know how much he weighs, but I hope he will be over 700kg by April.

September 2022

Finally, the acclimation process has begun.

He is no longer just a leisurely grazer; he has taken the first step toward becoming a racehorse.

He is quite a spirited boy, and his temperament seems to be quite rough.

We are very much looking forward to seeing him, because in Banei horse racing, it is better to have a strong temperament.

October 2022

He is gradually growing taller and getting into good shape.

He is waist-high, so he is still growing. I am looking forward to it.

November 2022

Finally, they started practicing taking their mouthpiece and walking.

He is surprisingly obedient (^^;

I hope he doesn't go flying off the handle during the race…

They are tethered to a light truck like this and walked with a person behind them giving them directions with a mouthpiece.

It is said to be a safe method for both horses and people, but if all the horses were to do this, the amount of exercise for the people would be half of what it is.

It's amazing.

First, he wants to improve his physical strength, and once he and the horse are able to communicate with each other through the mouthpiece, he will be able to pull the sled next.

Training has begun, and the countdown to entering the stables has begun.
The sleds are being pulled, but they seem to be running wild to the point of surprise (laughs).

２０１１年に約１５００頭生産されていた農用馬は、２０２１年には１０００頭を切り、９００頭台に減少しています。

毎年、ばんえい競馬には２５０頭あまりの新馬が登録されますが、能力検査の合格率が７０％とすると、３６０頭ぐらいが受験していることになります。

少なくても、４００頭程度を競走馬として確保する必要がありますが、１０年で５００頭減少している現状から、後１０年で競馬自体が成立しなくなるのではないかと懸念しています。

私が最も懸念していること：オーナーブリーダー中心であること

競馬が成立するには、生産者・馬主・競馬主催者の３者のバランスが大切だと考えています。

今、生産者の高齢化・後継者問題が、非常に大きくクローズアップされています。

加えて、オーナーブリーダー中心の構造自体が危ないと感じています。

ばんえい競馬は、生産者が主役ですから、「私の馬」が強いかどうかを競うことから始まったわけで、オーナーブリーダーが多い状況です。

サラブレッドでは、マーケットブリーダーも多く、生産者の減少と馬主の減少はイコールではありません。

ばんえい競馬の場合、オーナーブリーダーが生産を辞めると、同時に馬主も減ることになります。

つまり、需要と供給が同時に減少するので、一気に市場規模が小さくなります。

一旦、減少が加速すると、歯止めが効かなくなる可能性があります。

そこで、外部から馬主が増えれば、生産者が減少したとしても、生産者の馬に対する需要が残るようにならないか？と考えたわけです。

馬の生産数を増やすにはどうすればいいのか

市場の基本は、需要と供給のバランスにあると前提します。

需要と供給のどちらも増やす必要があるわけですが、私には、馬の生産ができませんので直接的に供給を増やすことができません。

そこで、「需要＝ばんえい競馬で馬を持ちたくなる」を増やすにはどうしたら良いのかを考えてみました。

競走馬需要を増やすには

①は、市や主催者が各媒体を通じて行っています。今後とも期待しています。

②は、主催者の力量にかかっています。

生産者が市場に馬を出すよりも、高い値段で取引されるような状況にするには、馬主の需要を増やさないといけません。

それには、賞金や手当などを増やしていく必要があります。

また、地域において、馬主というステータスがどのようなものになっているのかは分かりませんが、

オーナーブリーダーが中心であることが、馬主＝牧場主さんとなり、サラブレッドとは違う感覚があるのかもしれません。

地元の名士が、みんな馬主であるような状況になってほしいと思っています。

③は、サラブレッド同様、

一口馬主→地方馬主資格取得→地方共有や中古馬売買→新馬といったルートで馬主が増えていくことを狙っています。

一口馬主自体がまだ存在しないので、なかなか一般には広がらない状況です。

地方共有だけは、私でも可能ですので目下計画中です。

本サイトにて、ともかく情報を出して出して、一人でも多く興味を持ってもらうということが大切だと考えています。

競走馬供給を増やすには

生産者の高齢化が問題になっているので、現在の生産者に生産頭数を増やしてもらうというのは、なかなか難しいと思っています。

素人考えですが、牧場経営に興味を持っている方は一定数いるとは思います。

お金がないのが普通だと思いますので、元生産牧場などを中古で継承する仕組みを自治体には作ってもらいたいと思います。

現在経営中の牧場に就職し、その後事業継承できるのが一番だと思いますが、そもそも事業規模ではなく、生活の一環としての生産を行っている方も多いでしょう。

また、事業継承となると時間がかかるので、元々牧場だったところを、自治体で買い上げて、安価で貸し出すことはできないものでしょうか。

②に関しては、馬の担い手研修会でも言われているように、「馬の生産だけでは生活ができない」ということを変えていく必要があります。

サラブレッドと違うのは、馬の値段が青天井かどうかだと思います。

ばんえい競馬の場合、馬市場では、Kgいくらという考えが基本のため、付加価値がほとんど考慮されていません。

馬肉の需要で値段が決まるので、今年はいくらぐらいという予想が立ちます。

サラブレッドは、付加価値の塊で、重賞が取れそう・地方に合いそうといった「予想」で、どんどん値段が釣り上がっていきます。

結局の所、競馬自体の賞金設定などで、競走馬としての価値を上げていくしか無いと考えています。

そして、マーケットブリーダーが増えていくことを願っています。

生産者・馬主・主催者の理想の形

私の考える理想の形は、

・生産者は、強い馬・良い血統・牧場のブランド化により、馬市場に出すよりも高い値段で売買され、専業化ができる

・馬主は、ばんえい競馬の馬主としてのステータスを感じ、収支含めサラブレッドに負けない喜びを享受する

・主催者は、レースの魅力を高め、帯広といえば「ばんえい競馬」として、観光収入を大きく得る

・・・まあ、こういう形になったら、馬の価格が上がりすぎて、私が馬を持つことはできなくなるわけですが^^;

問題は、これから１０年以内になんとかしないといけないということです。

私の知りうる限りの情報で考えた内容ですので、内部の情報をご存知の方々にとっては、うす～い内容だと思います。

ぜひとも、議論をすることにより、何かしらの良い考えが生まれれば良いと思います。

ーWhy I believe that increasing the number of new horse owners will benefit Banei Horse Racingー

In Banei horse racing, the problem is the decrease in the number of horses produced.

Banei horse racing began with a competition to see if "my horse" was strong enough, so there are many owner-breeders in this situation.

In Thoroughbreds, there are also many market breeders, and the decrease in the number of producers does not equal the decrease in the number of horse owners.

In the case of Banei horse racing, when owner-breeders quit production, the number of horse owners also decreases at the same time.

In other words, demand and supply decrease at the same time, and the size of the market shrinks at once.

Once the decline accelerates, it may become unstoppable.

Therefore, we wondered if the number of horse owners from outside would increase, wouldn't the demand for horses from producers remain even if the number of producers decreased? That's what we thought.

２．How can we increase horse production?

I assume that the basis of the market is the balance between supply and demand.

Both supply and demand need to be increased, but since I cannot produce horses, I cannot directly increase supply.

Therefore, I thought about how to increase "demand = the desire to own a horse in Banei Horse Racing".

(1) Increase the appeal of Banei horse racing itself
　→Convey the appeal of the race itself and the history of Banei horse racing

(2) Increase the value of the racehorse rather than the value of the horse meat market
　→Increase the monetary value of the horse, such as prize money
　→Increase the value of horse owners in the region

(3) Increase the number of horse owners
　→Create an environment where it is easy to start as a horse owner in Banei horse racing, such as a single owner, local share ownership, and used horse market.
　→Disclose information about horse owners, such as process, cost, and income/expenses

３．How to increase the racehorse supply

(1) Increase the number of producers
　→Provide an environment where new farmers can try out farming.
　→Provide an environment of land and buildings

(2) Enable farmers to make a living through farm management
　→Increase the value of horses

４．Ideal form for producers, horse owners and organizers

My ideal would be

The producer can sell their horses at a higher price than the horse market due to the strong horses, good bloodlines, and branding of the ranch, and can become a full-time business.

Owners will feel the status as a horse owner of Banei Horse Racing and enjoy the pleasure of being able to compete with Thoroughbreds, including income and expenditure.

The organizer will increase the attractiveness of the races and generate a large amount of tourism income by making Banei Horse Racing a part of Obihiro's image.

...Well, if this happens, the price of horses will go up too much and I won't be able to own a horse;

The problem is that we have to do something about it within the next 10 years.
